Leaky valve covers are among the most common problems with air-cooled VW engines. Traces of oil on the engine or heat exchanger often indicate that the seal is not working optimally.
Traditionally, valve covers used cork gaskets. These can generally work, but are sensitive to aging, heat, and mechanical stress.
A technically more precise solution is sealing via an O-ring gasket. An exactly milled groove allows the O-ring to be compressed evenly. This creates even pressure across the entire sealing surface.
Another important point is the design of the valve cover itself. Precisely manufactured covers with cleanly machined sealing surfaces ensure that the gasket can reliably perform its task.
Tips for a clean seal
-
Always thoroughly clean sealing surfaces
-
Do not install gaskets dry
-
Fasten valve covers evenly
-
Replace damaged gaskets in time
A clean seal not only ensures a dry engine but also prevents oil from getting onto hot components.
